Queenstown Lakes, Cromwell and Alexandra homeowners and businesses now have a faster, cheaper, and easier way to go solar. Future Energy is proud to announce we have been selected as one of two official installer partners for the Queenstown Electrification Accelerator (QEA) Solar Group Discount Programme, which launches today across the Queenstown-Lakes District.

If you have been thinking about solar panels in Queenstown, Wānaka, Arrowtown, Glenorchy, Kingston, Cromwell, Alexandra or anywhere else in the Southern Lakes, this is the moment to act. Through the programme, residents and businesses across the district can access a 10% discount across our full product range, including high-efficiency panels, hybrid inverters, and battery storage.

What Is the QEA Solar Group Discount Programme?

The Queenstown Electrification Accelerator (part of Rewiring Aotearoa) is a community-driven initiative, funded by the Queenstown Lakes District Council, Destination Queenstown, Central Lakes Trust and Ara Ake. Its mission is bold: to help Queenstown become the world’s most electrified destination, and to build a 2050 energy system by 2030.

The QEA Solar Discount Programme uses bulk-buying power to make solar panels in Queenstown more accessible. By aggregating demand across the district, the programme reduces customer acquisition costs for installers and passes those savings directly back to homes and businesses across the Southern Lakes.

The model is simple:

  • QEA leads outreach, education, and community engagement
  • Pre-qualified leads are passed to vetted installer partners (Future Energy is one of two)
  • Participating customers receive volume-based discounts on quality systems

This approach has been used successfully in solar group-buy programmes across the United States and Australia. QEA’s initial target is at least 100 solar or solar-and-battery systems installed across the Queenstown-Lakes District.

Who Is Eligible for the Queenstown Solar Discount?

The programme is open to:

  • Homeowners across the Queenstown-Lakes District
  • Landlords and tenants participating in QEA’s Solar for Renters programme
  • Businesses looking at commercial rooftop solar
  • Body corporates and community organisations considering shared installations

If you live, rent, or run a business anywhere in the district, you can register your interest through QEA and ask to be matched with Future Energy as your installer.

What You Get When You Sign Up

Future Energy’s proposal to QEA is straightforward and built around quality components homeowners can rely on:

  • 10% discount on every system size, from small residential through to commercial
  • Tier 1 SOLAX and Sigenergy inverters (single-phase and three-phase options)
  • 450W bi-facial Suntech panels as standard
  • LFP battery options from SOLAX Triple Power and Sigenergy SIG-BAT
  • 10-year workmanship guarantee
  • 10-year inverter and battery warranty
  • 25-year product warranty on panels
  • Free post-installation video session with our in-house product manager to walk you through your monitoring app, optimise your tariff, and answer questions
  • DG (Distributed Generation) application managed for you by Future Energy

Why Solar in Queenstown Makes Sense in 2026

The economics of residential solar in New Zealand have shifted decisively. Rewiring Aotearoa’s Electric Homes report found that rooftop solar is now the cheapest form of delivered energy available to New Zealand homes, at less than half the average grid electricity cost. Average payback periods sit between five and seven years, with returns of 10 to 15 percent over the system’s lifetime.

Several factors are pushing solar adoption right now, and they are particularly relevant to the Queenstown-Lakes:

1. Energy bills keep climbing. Locking in your generation cost for 25 years removes a major source of household financial stress.

2. Resilience matters in the Southern Lakes. With the Alpine Fault rupture risk and the district’s seasonal supply pressures, household-scale solar plus battery storage gives families a layer of independence the grid alone cannot.

3. Government regulation has just expanded export limits. In June 2025, the Government expanded the voltage range from plus or minus 6 percent to plus or minus 10 percent, which allows larger residential systems and more electricity to be exported back to the grid. This makes bigger, more economical Queenstown solar systems possible.

4. Faster building consents. New homes that include solar panels in the design now have building consents fast-tracked to 10 working days, down from 20.

Why Future Energy Was Chosen as a QEA Installer

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do solar panels cost in Queenstown?

Under the QEA Solar Group Discount Programme, a small (4.5kW) residential system from Future Energy starts at $8,999. Average pricing through this programme is $1,500-$2,000 per kW installed.

What is the payback period for residential solar power systems?

Average payback periods in New Zealand are 5 to 7 years, with returns of 10 to 15 percent over the lifetime of the system. The exact payback for your home depends on your power usage, roof orientation, and whether you add battery storage.

Do I need a battery with my solar panels?

You do not need a battery for a solar system to work, but a battery lets you use solar power generated during the day at night, increases your self-consumption, and provides backup power during outages. Given Queenstown-Lakes’ grid resilience considerations, batteries are worth strong consideration.

Will my roof void its warranty if I install solar?

Future Energy installs use approved roof mounting systems matched to your roof type (tile, metal tray, longrun, or membrane). When installed correctly by certified solar electricians, your roof warranty remains intact.

Can renters in Queenstown access this programme?

Yes. The QEA Solar for Renters programme runs in parallel and uses a shared-benefits model where landlords own the system and tenants benefit from lower bills. Over 60 households are already registered.

What products does Future Energy use under the programme?

Suntech bi-facial panels (450W and 585W), SOLAX inverters (single-phase and three-phase, including hybrid models), Sigenergy inverters and batteries, and SOLAX LFP battery storage. Solar for Renters installs include SigEnergy, GivEnergy, Enphase, or AlphaESS inverters.

Ready to Take Advantage of the Discount?

The programme runs through July 2026, registration is open until June 8th.
