Smarter energy for Waikato and Bay of Plenty homes

The Waikato and Bay of Plenty is one of New Zealand’s most diverse energy regions, from Hamilton’s fast-growing suburbs to Tauranga’s sunny coast, the rural blocks of the Waikato heartland and the baches of the Coromandel. Homeowners get in touch for different reasons: to stop rising bills, to stay powered when the weather turns, to build energy-smart, or to live more sustainably. Whatever brings you to us, Future Energy gives you independent advice and designs a system that performs across this varied and growing region.

Stop rising power bills eating your household budget.

If bill shock is what brought you here, start where the savings are biggest. From April 2026 Powerco increased its lines charges by 7.9%, which lands on every Waikato and Bay of Plenty household regardless of retailer or usage. Generating your own power is the most effective way to push that bill back down. We give you a clear, property-specific savings projection at your free consult.

Keep your home running when the weather turns.

Rural lifestyle blocks and coastal homes across the region face weather-related outages, and rapid growth is putting the grid under pressure at peak times. Future Energy designs battery storage around your critical loads (lights, fridge, key sockets and comms) so the essentials stay on when the grid goes down.

Building? Design an energy-smart home from day one.

Waikato is one of the fastest growing regions in New Zealand region, and thousands of new homes go up across Hamilton, Tauranga and the wider area every year. Building new is the ideal moment to design solar, battery, hot water and EV charging to work together from the start, so you move in with lower running costs already built in. George can meet you at any stage, including before consent, to design and quote the right system.

Solar Panels

Oriented to your roof at design stage for maximum generation, with cabling run through the walls for a clean finish and no surface conduit..

Battery Storage

If your region is prone to outages, or you are out much of the day. Batteries can be a smart investment.

Hot water heat pump

Hot Water Heat Pump

A hot water heat pump cuts your water heating costs by around 60%, whether you are coming off gas or an old electric cylinder.

Power your life with clean energy you make yourself.

The Waikato and Bay of Plenty runs largely on renewable hydro, but at peak times the national grid still fires up coal at Huntly to keep up. Every unit of your own solar you use at peak is a unit that does not. Future Energy designs one integrated system so more of your home runs on clean energy you generate yourself.

Harvest the sun. Store what you need. Trade the rest back to the grid. Future Energy designs and installs solar panels, battery storage, hot water heat pumps and EV home charging across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty, installed by a local team that knows the region.

Smart energy solutions for Waikato and Bay of Plenty homes

Every system is custom designed for your property, your roof, your usage patterns and your budget: high-performance technology that makes the most of the region’s strong solar conditions.

We had a ducted heatpump system installed in our house recently. The initial meeting with Shane was very thorough, and he really took the time to consider what we were hoping to achieve with the system, and provided advice about the best options for conserving energy and saving us money. We had quotes from several other companies, but this one was competitive, and they were patient with all our questions and gave great explanations and rationale. Installation all went well and it’s been life changing for us. We’re no longer freezing in the mornings, our house is warm and free from condensation! Being able to control the system remotely via WIFI is such a bonus too!

Future energy just installed a Panasonic ducted heating system into our home. It was a quick and easy process and we are extremely pleased with the result. All of the installation crew were extremely friendly, professional and left no mess! Initially we weren’t sure which type of system to go with but when Shane came out to give us a free quote he was so lovely and extremely knowledgeable and explained everything so well! He is clearly passionate about his role and teallly took the time to ask us what our needs were- as a family with young children with asthma and allergies he directed us to the product that would be best fit for this. We had quotes from multiple companies but because of our interaction with Shane, we felt confident Future energy were the right choice. Thankyou so much, I highly recommend both Future energy and the Panasonic ducted system!

I had the team at future energy install solar panels on my house in christchurch in late March 2026. Great results so far. From start to finish the team were great to communicate with. The install was smooth despite some changes, all done in 1 day! The quote was made via video call and the deal was alot better than other quotes. The sales pitch wasn't as pushy as other providers also. Overall very happy with my experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and the Bay of Plenty is among the best places in the country for solar. Tauranga averages over 2,300 sunshine hours a year, one of New Zealand's sunniest cities, while Hamilton gets around 2,000 hours, enough for strong, reliable generation right through the year. Plenty of sun means your panels produce well and your system works hard from day one, and with power prices rising, generating your own is one of the surest ways to stay ahead of them. Wherever you are, from Tauranga and Hamilton to the Coromandel and rural Waikato, we design each system around your roof and your local conditions to make the most of the sun you get.

Most households with a well-sized solar system cut their power bills by around 30 to 45% in the first year, and more with a battery. The average New Zealand home saves about $1,000 a year, and sunny Tauranga homes tend to sit at the higher end. Your saving depends on system size, how much power you use during the day, roof orientation and your retailer's buyback rate. We provide a detailed, property-specific savings projection at every free consultation, including export credit estimates at your current buyback rate.

Most residential solar systems in the region pay for themselves in around 6 to 8 years for solar alone, and a little longer once you add a battery. Sunny Tauranga sits at the faster end, thanks to its high sunshine hours. Payback depends on system size, energy use, roof orientation and your buyback rate. We provide a personalised payback projection for your home at every free consultation, with full transparency on the assumptions we use.

For many households, yes. Solar on its own is a cost-effective first step that cuts your energy costs immediately. Adding a battery stores your daytime solar for use in the evening and overnight, so you draw less from the grid, and it keeps your essential circuits running during an outage, which is especially valuable on rural and coastal properties. Whether a battery pays for itself depends on how you use power, so we give you an honest assessment for your specific situation rather than a one-size-fits-all answer.

Yes, and it can still make good sense. A solar system on a Coromandel bach generates whenever the sun is out, earning export credits at your retailer's buyback rate even when you are not there, which helps offset the running costs of a second home. When you are staying, you power the bach from your own roof instead of the grid. We design and install solar for holiday homes across the Coromandel and Thames Coast, sized to how the home is actually used. Alternatively, it may make sense to install at Atmoce battery to keep your fridge, freezer and security system running during an outage. This is an AC coupled battery, therefore does not rely on a solar system.

Yes, often very much so. Rural lifestyle blocks in the Waikato can face weather-related outages and, in remote spots, high grid connection costs. A solar and battery system cuts what you draw from the grid, keeps essential circuits running during outages, and where a new grid connection would be very expensive, can be the most cost-effective way to power the property at all. We assess every rural property individually and give you an honest comparison of the options.

From 1 April 2026, Powerco increased its lines charges by 7.9% for Waikato and Bay of Plenty households. Part of your lines charge is a fixed daily amount you pay no matter what, and part is built into your per-unit price. Solar cannot remove the fixed daily portion, but by cutting how much power you draw it reduces both your energy charges and the usage-based part of your lines costs, which is where the biggest savings are. For an average home that is around $1,000 a year in solar savings, far more than these lines increases add, so a well-sized system more than offsets them over its lifetime

Yes. Charge during the day straight from your solar, or overnight from off-peak grid energy. With long driving distances across the region and rising petrol prices, home EV charging is one of the most financially compelling reasons to go solar. We install Wallbox, Tesla Wall Connector and SolaX smart chargers across the region.

A typical residential solar system starts from around $9,000 to $14,000 for a smaller 8 to 10 panel installation, rising to $20,000 or more for a larger system with battery storage. Exact pricing depends on your roof, energy usage and which products best suit your property. We provide a same-day, no-obligation quote at every free consultation, with a full breakdown of expected savings and payback period.

Yes, and a new build is the best possible opportunity to design a future-ready energy system from the ground up. Solar, battery, hot water heat pump and EV charging can all be integrated at build stage for a streamlined result from day one. We work directly with builders across Hamilton’s growth suburbs, Tauranga’s coastal corridors and the wider region, and George can meet you at any stage, including before consent, to design and quote the right system.
