Project Overview

Ryan has a fully electric home at Jacks Point and, with a spa pool, underfloor heating and a young family getting through a lot of hot water, his power bills were running $600 to $700 a month in winter and $300 to $400 a month in summer, an estimated $5,520 a year. He wanted to cut those costs and gain some independence from the grid in case of an outage, but without committing his full budget to a large solar and battery system on day one. Future Energy designed a 10.8kW solar array around a SolaX X1-VAST-10K battery-ready hybrid inverter, a system estimated to save $3,107 in the first year, pay for itself in around 7 years and 6 months, and expand with batteries and more panels as his budget allows.

The Challenge

Ryan’s household runs entirely on electricity, and high draw appliances, a spa pool, underfloor heating, and hot water for a young family, add up to a modelled 43kWh of consumption a day, well above a typical home. He wanted to bring his power bill down, but he was also thinking beyond the bill: he was conscious of how exposed his family would be if a natural disaster took the grid down, and wanted some ability to keep the essentials running without it. The catch was budget. A full solar and battery system from day one wasn’t realistic, so the system needed to deliver real savings immediately while leaving a clear path to add resilience later, without needing to replace anything already installed.

The System

SolaX X1-VAST-10K – Battery Ready 10kW Hybrid Inverter

The most important decision in a staged solar rollout is the inverter, because it decides what can be added later. Future Energy specified the SolaX X1-VAST-10K, a 10kW battery-ready hybrid inverter that gives Ryan some power independence even before a battery is added. In PV Backup mode the inverter can supply up to 50% of its capacity directly from solar while the sun is out, with no batteries required, though it cannot support the home overnight or in low light without them. Once batteries are added, the same inverter switches to full EPS backup output with a switchover of under 10 milliseconds, fast enough to be whole home capable once wired to a backup circuit. The inverter carries a warranty of 5 to 10 years.

24 x Suntech 450W Panels – 10.8kW at Jacks Point

Twenty four Suntech STP450S-H48-Nth+ panels were installed at a 35 degree tilt, for a combined 10.8kW array. Modelled to generate 39.7kWh a day against the home’s 43kWh of daily consumption, the system offsets the large majority of a genuinely high use, fully electric household, backed by a 25 year panel warranty. The gap between generation and consumption is exactly the kind of load a future battery addition is designed to close.

Built to Expand: Batteries and More Panels Later

Rather than sizing the system for everything Ryan might eventually want, Future Energy sized it for what he needed now and what the inverter could grow into. Modular batteries can be added to the SolaX X1-VAST-10K whenever budget allows, unlocking full home backup during an outage and closing more of the gap between solar production and a high consumption household. The system scales with Ryan’s needs rather than requiring a second, separate installation.

The Results

  • 10.8kW solar array across 24 Suntech 450W panels
  • SolaX X1-VAST-10K 10kW hybrid inverter, battery ready from installation
  • 39.7kWh of clean electricity generated every day against 43kWh of daily consumption
  • $3,107 estimated first year savings, cutting an annual bill of around $5,520 down to about $2,420
  • $1,229 estimated annual solar export credit
  • Estimated payback in 7 years and 6 months
  • Daytime backup of up to 50% of inverter capacity from solar alone, even without a battery
  • Full EPS whole home backup unlocked with a switchover of under 10 milliseconds once batteries are added
  • 25 year panel warranty, 10 year inverter warranty, 10 year installation warranty

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a solar system be expanded later, or do you need to decide everything upfront?

Yes, if the inverter is chosen with that in mind. Ryan’s SolaX X1-VAST-10K hybrid inverter is battery-ready from day one, so batteries and, where headroom allows, more panels can be added later without replacing the inverter. That means a staged rollout does not mean a second installation down the track, just an addition to the first.

Can a solar system provide backup power without a battery installed?

To a point. The SolaX X1-VAST-10K inverter installed for Ryan includes a PV Backup mode that can supply up to 50% of the inverter’s capacity directly from solar while the sun is out, with no battery required. It will not support the home overnight or in low light without a battery, but it does give some daytime independence from the grid immediately, with full whole home backup available once a battery is added.

How do you size solar for a fully electric home with a spa pool and underfloor heating?

High draw, always on appliances like a spa pool and underfloor heating push both the size of the array and the choice of inverter. Ryan’s Jacks Point home models at 43kWh of consumption a day, well above typical households, which is why the 10.8kW array was paired with a 10kW inverter capable of handling that load and expanding further as needed.

What’s the benefit of a battery ready inverter over a standard one?

A standard grid tied inverter without battery readiness typically needs to be replaced if you want to add battery storage later. A battery-ready inverter like the SolaX X1-VAST-10K installed for Ryan is designed to accept batteries from the outset, so adding storage later is a matter of connecting battery modules to the existing inverter rather than a second full installation, making it a better fit for anyone staging their solar investment over time.
