Project Overview

Solar installation NZ projects don’t always need to be large to make a big difference, and this Hobsonville home shows what a compact, well specified system can do. Ketan’s household was using around 11kWh a day, and Future Energy designed a 4.4kW solar array using ten premium all black panels, projected to produce an estimated 15.9kWh a day, comfortably covering daily consumption with capacity to spare. The system is projected to cut the annual power bill from around $2,060 to roughly $286, delivering $1,776 in savings in year one, with the investment paying for itself in 4 years and 4 months.

The Challenge

With daily consumption of around 11kWh, Ketan didn’t need an oversized system, but wanted a solar array that could comfortably cover daily usage without compromising on how it looked on the roof. Hobsonville’s newer homes and modern streetscapes mean the visual finish of a rooftop system matters as much to some homeowners as the numbers behind it, so the brief was to pair strong performance with a sleek, premium look rather than a standard panel finish.

The System

10 Premium All Black Longi Panels at 4.4kW

The system uses 10 x Longi LR5 54HTB 440M panels, a premium all black module chosen for its clean, uniform finish as much as its performance, for a combined array output of 4.4kW. The panels carry a 25 year materials and processing warranty and a 25 year linear power warranty, guaranteeing at least 88.9% of rated output after two and a half decades.

SolaX X1 BOOST 5K G4 Inverter

A SolaX X1 BOOST 5K G4 inverter, rated at 5kW AC output, converts the array’s DC output for use in the home and export to the grid. The inverter carries a 12 year warranty and includes built in export control and WiFi monitoring so Ketan can track performance from the SolaX app.

No Battery Storage

This installation is solar only, with no battery storage included. At an estimated 15.9kWh of daily production against roughly 11kWh of daily consumption, the array was sized to comfortably meet the household’s daytime usage while exporting surplus generation to the grid at 20c per kWh.

The Results

  • 4.4kW solar array installed using 10 premium all black panels, producing an estimated 15.9kWh a day
  • Year 1 savings of $1,776, with payback in 4 years and 4 months
  • Annual power bill projected to fall from around $2,060 to roughly $286
  • Estimated solar export earnings of $771 a year from surplus generation sent back to the grid
  • 25 year materials and processing warranty plus a 25 year linear power warranty on the solar panels
  • 12 year inverter warranty and a 10 year installation warranty

A small roof, a sleek finish, a big drop in the power bill.

Real World Update – One Year On

One year after installation, Ketan reported actual savings of $1,588, a little below the $1,776 estimated in the original proposal. The gap isn’t a shortfall in the system’s performance: since going solar, Ketan has also bought an EV, and now charges it at home, adding meaningfully to the household’s overall electricity use. With more of that higher consumption now drawn from the grid outside daylight hours, the solar system still delivers a substantial reduction on what the power bill would otherwise be, even with an EV added to the mix.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes premium all black solar panels different from standard panels?

Premium all black panels use a black backsheet and black frame instead of the usual silver frame and white backsheet, giving a more uniform, low profile look on the roof. Performance is comparable to standard panels of the same wattage, so the choice mostly comes down to aesthetics, which mattered to Ketan when specifying this Hobsonville installation.

How much solar do I need for a household using around 11kWh a day?

Based on Ketan’s Hobsonville installation, a 4.4kW array using 10 panels was enough to produce an estimated 15.9kWh a day, comfortably covering that level of daily consumption with surplus left over to export. The right size always depends on your specific usage pattern and roof space, which Future Energy models before recommending a system.

How long does a small residential solar system take to pay for itself?

Ketan’s 4.4kW system is projected to pay for itself in 4 years and 4 months, based on year one savings of $1,776. After that, the system continues delivering savings for the remainder of its 25 year warrantied lifespan.

What warranties come with this solar installation?

This installation includes a 25 year materials and processing warranty and a 25 year linear power warranty on the Longi solar panels, a 12 year warranty on the SolaX inverter, and a 10 year installation warranty from Future Energy.
