Modern residential air conditioners are reverse-cycle systems, which means they heat in winter and cool in summer, exactly the same function as a heat pump. "Air conditioning" tends to be the term used when people are thinking about cooling; "heat pump" tends to be the term used when people are thinking about heating. The hardware is the same.

That’s why the best way to reduce home energy costs is a combination approach: a hot water heat pump cuts water-heating costs by up to 70%, while efficient air conditioning and ventilation reduce heating loads. Add solar and a home battery, and you’re generating the electricity to run them for free.
As a rough guide, allow 60 to 100 watts of heating capacity per square metre of floor area for a well-insulated NZ home, and 100 to 150 watts per square metre for older or poorly insulated homes. A typical 80 square metre open-plan living area needs around 6 to 8 kW of capacity. Undersizing means the system runs at full capacity constantly and never quite catches up; oversizing wastes money. Ducted systems are usually 2 days; new builds take 2-3 days and are scheduled across two visits. We schedule installs to minimise disruption and complete all consents and electrical sign-off before we leave site.
Yes, but the process is straightforward. We recommend an annual professional service, with simple filter cleaning every 3 to 6 months that you can do yourself (open the front cover, remove the filter, vacuum then wash in warm water, let it dry, refit). A Future Energy service of a high wall system covers the condensate drain and drip tray, electrical connections and terminals, the refrigerant connection, the filter, the coil, both outdoor and indoor units, fan and airflow, and a full function check including fault diagnosis. For ducted systems we also inspect the supply and return grills and verify airflow through the ductwork. Important: under your manufacturer warranty, faults caused by skipped servicing are not covered. Annual servicing protects your warranty and extends the life of the system.
