The Challenge
Like many homeowners across New Zealand, this Dunedin family wanted more than just lower power bills – they wanted energy security. Living on the coast, where weather can be unpredictable and grid outages a real concern, they needed a solution that would keep their home running regardless of what happened outside.
They also wanted to move away from reliance on expensive grid power and create a comfortable, climate controlled home that was efficient year round. Future Energy designed a fully integrated solution to meet all of those needs.
The Solution
Solar Power System
Future Energy installed 20 x 500W high efficiency solar panels, delivering a total system capacity of 10kW. This is a substantial system – designed to generate enough power to cover the household’s daily consumption and push surplus energy into the battery for use at night or during grid outages.
SigenEnergy Battery – 9.04kWh Whole Home Backup
The centrepiece of this installation is the SigenEnergy 9.04kWh battery system, configured for whole home backup. This means that in the event of a grid outage, the home seamlessly switches to battery power – keeping lights, appliances, heating, and essential systems running without interruption. The battery charges during the day from solar generation and is ready to support the home through the night or extended outages.
Daikin Ducted Heat Pump System
To complete the home’s energy transformation, Future Energy installed a Daikin ducted air conditioning system. Ducted systems offer whole home climate control from a single, discreet unit – providing efficient heating in winter and cooling in summer. Powered by solar during the day, the heat pump runs at minimal cost to the homeowner while delivering consistent, comfortable temperatures throughout the home.
The Results
- Whole home battery backup – the family is protected from grid outages with no interruption to daily life
- 10kW of solar generation powering the home and charging the battery throughout the day
- Dramatically reduced reliance on grid electricity and lower ongoing power costs
- Year round home comfort delivered by a Daikin ducted system, powered largely by solar
- Peace of mind – a complete, future proofed energy solution built to last 20+ years
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens to my home during a power outage?
With the SigenEnergy battery configured for whole home backup, your home automatically switches to battery power the moment the grid goes down – with no manual intervention needed. Lights, appliances, the heat pump, and other essential systems continue running as normal. Most homeowners don’t even notice the switch has happened.
How long will the battery power my home during an outage?
The SigenEnergy 9.04kWh battery can power a typical home for several hours depending on usage. If the outage occurs during daylight hours, the solar panels will continue charging the battery, significantly extending how long the home can run independently from the grid. For most short outages – which are the most common – the battery provides complete coverage.
Does the battery only kick in during outages, or does it help every day?
Both. Every day, the battery stores excess solar energy generated during daylight hours and uses it to power your home in the evening when the sun goes down. This reduces your grid electricity consumption significantly. The whole home backup function is an added layer of protection on top of that daily benefit.
How long does installation take?
For a system of this size – solar, battery, and ducted heat pump – installation is typically completed over two to three days. The Future Energy team works efficiently to minimise disruption to your household, and the system is commissioned and tested before the team leaves. You’ll be generating and storing your own power from day one.
Do I need to be home during the installation?
We recommend being home on the first day so our team can walk you through the system, confirm placement of panels and equipment, and answer any questions. Once everything is commissioned, we’ll show you how to use the monitoring app so you can track your generation and battery levels in real time.
